Manchester United’s Ander Herrera endorses Jose Mourinho’s playing style

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United’s Ander Herrera has insisted it would be unfair to sack Louis van Gaal but admitted that he is a fan of Jose Mourinho’s style of football.

Reports this week suggested that Mourinho is set to replace the under pressure van Gaal at Old Trafford at the end of the campaign.

Spanish midfielder Herrera, who has been in and out of the side in recent weeks, believes English football is more patient with managers than in his homeland and that it would be harsh to let go of van Gaal. He did, however, endorse the style of Mourinho.

“The prism is different than in Spain. Here it is more patient, but not only with van Gaal. With Mourinho, three points from relegation, [Chelsea] didn’t throw him out,” Herrera said.

“Wenger has been nine years without titles and continued at Arsenal. City go three weeks without a win and no doubts about Pellegrini. So back to van Gaal, I think so, it would be unfair because the line of work in England is to give confidence.

When asked about suggestions that Mourinho’s style would not satisfy United purists, Herrera added: “It’s funny, that. You see, Mourinho played for Chelsea with Cesc, Willian, Oscar, Hazard and Costa. Only Matic as defensive midfielder.

“Is that not attractive? Or his Madrid scoring record? His Chelsea, with how hard it is, won the Premier League well in advance… Yes I have seen Chelsea play well.”

The jury is very much out on van Gaal and Herrera’s comments come at an interesting time.

The veteran Dutchman had been under pressure in recent months but wins against Derby and Stoke have alleviated the scrutiny placed on him for now. While van Gaal looks like he will be in charge for the rest of the campaign, the summer will be an interesting one in terms of United’s future.
