The BBC’s Dan Roan and Simon Stone report that no agreement has been completed yet but negotiations have begun over a deal to bring him to Old Trafford.
In the last 48 hours, rumours have intensified with regards to Mourinho and United. They all started with COPE radio station in Spain, were followed by Spanish newspaper El Confidencial and MARCA and now both the BBC and Manchester Evening News are reporting that talks have taken place.

This has now gone past the stage of it being another line in the gossip column – United are actively taking steps towards Mourinho becoming our next manager, and I’m delighted to see the club are being proactive in light of Manchester City’s announcement with Pep Guardiola.
We’ve left ourselves on the edge of a cliff in terms of our club right now and Mourinho is the only available manager who is capable of taking control of that.
He’ll come with baggage and there would be issues but at a time where United have lost their identity as champions, Mourinho is the right man to reinvigorate that winning mentality.
