Louis van Gaal has admitted he is deeply frustrated after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday.
A late Diego Costa goal robbed Man United of a hugely important victory in the chase for this season’s top four after a 90 minutes in which we were by far the better side.
Some sloppy play in the last 20 minutes let Chelsea back into the game and that has clearly vexed van Gaal.
Speaking after the game, van Gaal said: “It is deep frustration for me because we were the better team. Again, we did not win and we had the chances but we did not win.
“The defensive organisation, you have to be composed. When you can control the ball, you have to control the ball and then you can play it out, not just kicking the ball away and then the next attack of Chelsea is there. I don’t think that all the fouls were free-kicks but this referee gave them a lot of free-kicks at the end of the game.
“The time was also already over the six minutes and he let the corner kick play on. Then we had a free pitch for us, a lot of space, and then he whistled. He did that in the first half as well, maybe you remember that, so I think you cannot do that. I don’t think that was fair to two teams.”
I share plenty of the same frustrations van Gaal is having, especially the fact United’s players couldn’t hold onto possession and simply booted the ball clear which immediately set Chelsea off with another attack. Conceding a goal was inevitable playing like that and ultimately it proved to be the case.
With all the teams bar Manchester City above us winning this weekend, United have lost further ground on the race for a top four spot and there will be plenty of frustrated fans after a really disappointing draw at Stamford Bridge.
