Jesse Lingard has admitted that Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Sunday felt like a defeat following Diego Costa’s late equaliser.
Man United went in front thanks to a superb effort from Lingard before Costa struck in the dying minutes to earn a point for Chelsea.
The result left United fifth in the Premier League, six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City. Lingard believes United are improving despite the draw at Stamford Bridge.
“We played the majority of the game well but to concede late on feels like a defeat,” Lingard said.
“It was instinct to turn and hit it [for the goal] but it was the three points we wanted. I think we’re playing a lot better now, as a collective we’re doing well.”
With Arsenal, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur all winning over the course of the weekend, United needed a win against Chelsea and they failed to get it.
Missing out on the top four of the league is a real possibility and one that would be disastrous for the club. United take on Sunderland next week and getting anything less than three points is unthinkable.
