Man United opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge thanks to a superb effort from Jesse Lingard before Diego Costa struck late on to earn a point for the hosts.
It was a disappointing result but United were the better team for large parts of the match. Mata insisted that his side have improved in recent weeks.
“I think we played very good football. Coming to Stamford Bridge and playing the football we did for the first 30 minutes and in the second half,” Mata said.
“We had it so close but Chelsea were always trying to create chances but they scored a late goal and we didn’t have time to come back. When you win, when you play good football, confidence is back and I think we’re showing now some attractive football. It’s what the fans want to see. I think we’ve played really, really good in the last three or four games.”
United seemed to take their foot off the gas once Lingard scored and Chelsea punished them.
Louis van Gaal’s side needed three points in the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League and the draw will go down as a big disappointment. United are in danger of fading away and they need a run of victories starting with the game against Sunderland next weekend.
