Warren Joyce has said Adnan Januzaj‘s withdrawal against Norwich City’s U21s on Monday night was precautionary more than anything else.
Joyce also confirmed Varela had suffered a kick on his ankle which was the reason he was taken off.
Both players had to be replaced during the game leading to fresh concerns over injury problems at Manchester United, especially at right-back where Varela had flourished in recent games.
However, Speaking to MUTV after the game, Joyce hinted neither injury was serious but admitted they would have to wait and see.
He said: “Varela’s was just a kick on his ankle. Januzaj stretched and it was a precaution.”
I hope Varela’s impact injury on the foot was nothing more than just a painful collision because we’ve had such terrible luck with injuries in the full-back positions that we could really do with not suffering another one.
An injury to Januzaj would be a blow for him as well because his U21s performances have been excellent since returning from Borussia Dortmund, so being out of action would knock him back and limit his chances of getting some game time.
Scans will no doubt shed further light on injuries to both players and we should expect to hear an update on their condition from Louis van Gaal on Friday.
