Anthony Martial has opened up on his life at Manchester United and offered us all some insight into what makes him the player he is.
Having joined from AS Monaco in a deal worth over £50m once bonuses are paid, Martial came with huge expectations on his young shoulders and the press labelled him as a ‘waste of money’ before he had even kicked a ball.
He went on to shut up his critics swiftly with an incredible debut goal against Liverpool and has since gone on to become one of the most exciting players to watch in the Premier League.
Despite all the on-pitch excitement, Martial takes an entirely different approach when he isn’t in the spotlight.
Speaking to ManUtd.com in an exclusive interview, Martial said: “I’m quite a reserved person, a bit shy at first when I don’t know someone. I like to have a laugh and a joke, people have seen that in me. But, yes, I’m fairly quiet and I love spending time with my family.
“What do I do away from football? Go out for walks, go out to a restaurant. Marouane [Fellaini] has given me loads of restaurants to visit! I’ve tried them and then chosen the best ones.
“The weather here is quite a lot different to Monaco and the food is not quite the same. But it’s down to me to adapt to the country I have chosen to come to. And currently it’s all going well.
“I’m here with my partner and I’ve got a little girl. The club have helped me a lot in this area so now I’m really settled in where I live – although now it’s a little more difficult to go out as people recognise me more. Maybe I should put on a baseball cap!
“So I prefer to stay in at home more. But, yes, I feel like I’ve settled in well to life here.”
How many 20-year-old footballers are there with a wife and kid? Not many, and a settled home life is certainly reflected in Martial’s temperament. He’s cool and composed in every game, like he had been there before and already got the t-shirt. Defenders are now scared to square up against him in fear of being left for dead in a heap on the floor and he’s got fans sitting on the edge of their seats watching him play.
That’s what football should be all about. Excitement, attacking football and a real intent to entertain. Martial does all of that and more, all within the space of six months at Old Trafford. He really is a phenomenal talent.
After his blistering start to life in Manchester, the world truly is his oyster and United fans are rubbing their hands together in anticipation of what is to come from the Frenchman.
