Wayne Rooney defends Memphis Depay amid criticism following draw with Chelsea

by Tanveer Arayan

Wayne Rooney has brushed over Memphis Depay‘s mistake against Chelsea and not blamed the Dutchman for his misplaced pass in the build-up to their late equaliser from Diego Costa.

Memphis spurned a golden opportunity with a four-on-two situation as his misplaced pass went to Thibaut Courtois and Chelsea subsequently scored from the following attack.

It led to some vociferous criticism of the 21-year-old but Rooney has defended him and says Memphis can’t be blamed for what happened.

“I think we’re all disappointed,” Rooney said.

“Memphis is a fantastic player and that happens, we all give bad passes away. A lot of things happened from when you give the ball away to when they’ve scored the goal, so I don’t think we can stand here and blame Memphis.

Memphis has just got to use his head as it was a poor decision and an even worse pass. That doesn’t mean I am scapegoating but he just needs to be intelligent and remember the context of the situation first and foremost. In all honesty, van Gaal’s decision to bring him over Ander Herrera, when ball retention was what we needed, was a little strange in the first place.

His performance for Man United’s U21s on Monday night was very encouraging and I do think van Gaal made a smart move by playing him there as it means he’ll be focusing on how he played there instead of Chelsea, at least he should be.

I’ve got every belief that Memphis will show us what he is all about in his second season at the club but he’s got to start making is easier for himself as well.
