Reports this week suggest Mourinho is confident he’ll land the role at Old Trafford and has been continuously associated as Man United’s next boss.
Varane, 22, joined Real Madrid while the Portuguese manager was in charge and has blossomed at the Bernabeu since then. Part of an excellent young France team heading into Euro 2016, this year is set to be a big one for Varane so his stock will no doubt rise even further.
Back in 2004, Jose went as far as to say Varane was one of the best players in the world.
“I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he’s the best,” he said.
“A young player must be somebody who plays in the World Cup for the first time.
“These are players like Hazard, Neymar and Rafa Varane. Maybe I forget some others.”
Mourinho might want to take Varane away from Real Madrid but he’d surely have a hard time prising away one of the most promising young French players in world football from French legend and Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane.
That being said, money talks in football and United are cash rich at the moment so we may as well spend it somewhere, and we definitely need a partner for Chris Smalling at the back. Daley Blind has been solid at centre-back but I think his place in the team there has only ever been temporary.
