Wayne Rooney: Sunderland is a ‘must-win’ game

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has assessed the club’s upcoming fixture against Sunderland as a must-win game.

Louis van Gaal‘s side are sat in fifth place in the Barclays Premier League and are 12 points behind current league leaders Leicester City.

The Englishman has been in excellent form for Man United since the start of the year having scored six goals and Rooney believes a victory this weekend is vital for Man United’s chances of reaching the top four.

“It probably is a must-win game,” he told MUTV.

“We want to get into that top four again and try and push as high up the table as possible. The only way we can do that is by winning games.

“Sunderland’s ground is one that we’ve had a lot of good results at in the past, and we want a good performance, but I think on Saturday the most important thing is the result.

“They’re fighting for survival and obviously they have a passionate crowd so we know it’s going to be a difficult game for us.

United’s players will be well aware of what needs to be done between now and the end of the season and as much as conceding a late equaliser against Chelsea was disappointing, they are heading to Sunderland in good form.

With Anthony Martial playing the way he does, every defence is going to find it hard to stop us creating chances and if we play like we did at Stamford Bridge, I think we’ve got more than enough to comfortably sweep Sunderland aside.
