Louis van Gaal happy with Memphis Depay after Norwich U21s performance

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal insists he’s happy with Memphis Depay‘s performance for the U21s last week.

Fans were left frustrated with Memphis’ cameo at Stamford Bridge after he lost the ball while attempting to make a pass to Morgan Schneiderlin in the closing minutes of the game and let Chelsea capitalise.

However, Memphis played a key role in Man United’s 7-0 spanking over Norwich City by grabbing three assists for himself and van Gaal admits it could help the Dutchman raise his confidence on the first-team.

Speaking ahead of Sunderland, he said: “I think for him it was a very good match as it could raise his confidence and I have seen the reaction of the fans.

“These fans are the real fans, those who look to the second team, and they were very enthusiastic. He had three assist, but all his actions was very enthusiastic and it is also good for him.”

Van Gaal’s decision to play Memphis for the U21s was an excellent one. It immediately put to bed the frustrations of his mistake against Chelsea and allowed both him and the fans to concentrate on how he played against Norwich’s U21s.

I’m not sure what Memphis needs to bring that level of performance to the first-team but I’m convinced it will come with time. For him, it’s probably more of a mental block than anything else, when he can find that sort of confidence he had in abundance at PSV Eindhoven then we’ll start to see the real Memphis.
