The Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford has come under Speculation with Man United failing to close the gap on the teams above them in the Premier League and a loss to Sunderland has only cranked up the pressure on him even further.
Separate reports go as far as to say Mourinho is convinced he’s taking over at the end of the season and has reportedly told friends close to him it’s a ‘done deal.’
Despite those growing rumours, United haven’t come out to deny them in the same fashion they did when rumours about Pep Guardiola were circulating and Shearer feels that should worry van Gaal.
“I don’t think Man United are any further forward now to what they were when he [Van Gaal] took over,” Shearer said on Match of the Day this weekend.
“I don’t see any progression whatsoever despite them spending nearly £250 million.
“What will also be hugely alarming [for Van Gaal] is that there’s so many newspaper outlets going on about Mourinho – not one person from the Man United hierarchy has come out and denied that. That must be very worrying.”
I think United’s silence is pretty telling. They were lightning fast to deny the Guardiola reports, so why would it be any different with Mourinho if they are all false once again? It certainly points towards something going on behind the scene.
As for van Gaal being worried about it, he has probably had plenty of chats with Ed Woodward and the board about his position, so I doubt he will pay too much attention to the club’s silence but time is quickly running out for him at United.
