Rooney has suffered knee ligament damage in Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Sunderland the other week which means he’ll be ruled out for the next couple of months.
His absence creates an opportunity for somebody else to establish themselves up front but van Gaal is undecided on who that will be.
Speaking about his options, van Gaal said: “We have in Martial another striker, he has played several matches in this role and wants to play in it.
“I knew in advance that Rooney would play a lot of matches, then I have called Will Keane back and he has done very well in the second team. Sometimes you have to show it at the higher level and maybe he’ll get the chance to show it – you never know.”
It’s a tough one really. On the one hand you want to see Martial in what is his favoured position through the middle, which in turn would allow Memphis Depay to start out wide, but seeing as Martial has been playing so good on the left, do we really want to get in the way of that?
On the other hand we’ve got Keane who has been in prolific form for the U21s. The question around him is whether he’d be ready for the step up and I suppose there truly is only one way to find out about that.
United do have options without Rooney but they somewhat limited and although Martial is the stand-out choice, whether or not to keep him out on the left where he’s been on fire complicates the matter.
