AS report that Sporting have already made contact with Valdes over a potential deal this summer and say the 34-year-old has looked on the move as a favourable one.
Valdes is currently on loan until the end of the season at Belgian side Standard Liege after falling out with Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford and is not expected to return, which is why he’s almost certainly going to leave this summer.
If Valdes’ move materialised, he would become the second high-profile Spanish goalkeeper to move to the Portuguese league after the transfer of Iker Casillas to Porto, and would see the two shot-stoppers go head to head again as they once did for Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively.
Regarding United, when Valdes arrived at the club there were rumours that he was being lined up as a potential replacement for David de Gea had he left for Madrid.
However, after some questionable treatment from van Gaal and a lengthy spell playing with the U21s, Valdes joined Standard Liege on loan simply to start playing football again and although he missed their game at the window with a hamstring injury, will be glad to be away from United.
As for what happens this summer, he certainly won’t be returning to United if van Gaal is still in charge but it would be interesting to see what happens if the Dutchman left and David de Gea departed as well. He could, in theory, be given a new lease of life at United then.
