The 21-year-old came off the bench last weekend at the Stadium of Light following an injury to Matteo Darmian and made his debut for the first-team, but tonight’s Europa League tie will be where he makes his first start.
While van Gaal didn’t name Love, he is effectively the only right-back we have in the squad and van Gaal hinted towards him starting by saying whoever started there had only played one game for us.
When discussing United’s youngsters, van Gaal said: “They have played in the league, FA Cup and Europe, and that helps you develop more than playing for the Reserves.
“We have young players sitting on the bench and my belief is they can all play. For example, tomorrow’s right-back has only played one game for us.”
Through injuries, Love has been given a big opportunity with United and if he wants to stake any claim to continuing in the right-back role once everyone has recovered from injury, he’ll need to take full advantage of those chances.
United’s thin squad has been horribly exposed this season by our injury woes but players like Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have showed there can be a silver lining, and we’re all hoping Love can follow in his footsteps.
