Shrewsbury striker Andy Mangan believes his side are capable of matching Manchester United ahead of the FA Cup tie between the two sides on Monday.
Man United head into the game in awful form, with a dismal 2-1 defeat against Midtjylland ramping up the pressure on Louis van Gaal.
Shrewsbury, meanwhile, are currently 19th in League One having beaten Blackpool 3-2 last time out. Mangan insisted Shrewsbury can perform against Man United in the Cup.
“Manchester United, they’re a world superpower aren’t they? They’re one of the biggest clubs ever in the world,” Mangan said.
“Obviously they’d like to be doing better, but they can turn it on here and sort of do what they want, and we’ve got to stop them. We’ve shown that [we can perform] against higher league opposition, and we are going to hopefully show that again.”
Shrewsbury will have nothing to lose against United and they will be dangerous as a result.
A win for Louis van Gaal’s side is far from a foregone conclusion as United have been abysmal for large parts of the campaign. That being said, the pressure on van Gaal will likely reach fever pitch if he fails to advance in the competition.
