Reports in the past few weeks have suggested that Mourinho is set to take over at Man United amid uncertainty over van Gaal’s position at the club.
However, The Sunday Times’ Duncan Castles claimed on Thursday that Mourinho is instead planning to meet Inter Milan co-owner Massimo Moratti this weekend. Balague insisted that United are risking losing Mourinho by delaying contact with him.
“I keep saying it every week… at this particular time, right now, there is NO agreement with Mourinho, at all,” Balague wrote in a Q&A for Sky Sports.
“The message that has come in from his camp is that unless they call him now and agree something, he may go to another club. That’s the message he is sending via the media.”
It is a wonder what United are waiting for; under van Gaal, the team looks devoid of any hunger, desire or poise.
Mourinho would undoubtedly improve things but Ed Woodward seems to be reluctant to let van Gaal go. Any decision could prove to be a crucial one in terms of United’s success in the coming years, particularly with Pep Guardiola heading to Manchester City in the summer.
