Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he didn’t know who Marcus Rashford was prior to his “impressive” debut in Manchester United’s 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland on Thursday.
Rashford, who was only included in the starting lineup late on at Old Trafford after Anthony Martial picked up an injury during the warm-up, scored a brace on his senior debut for the club.
It was a superb performance from the 18-year-old, who has risen through the ranks at Man United. Wenger, speaking before Arsenal’s Premier League clash against United on Sunday, praised Rashford and insisted that his side will find it tough at Old Trafford.
“I watched him [Rashford] last night and he was quite impressive!,” Wenger said.
“Rashford I didn’t know but all the other players I knew. For us it’s quite simple to prepare. We need to prepare on our side for a strong performance.
“If we win we are in a strong position but still a long way to go. It’s always a difficult place to go. Even if they had lost [to Midtjylland] I would say it’s a difficult game.
“We work the whole season for this period. That’s where you’re really tested. It’s the most interesting period of the season. We need to show quality, nerves and desire.”
United have had to contend with a raft of injuries in recent weeks and that, combined with United’s poor form at home this term, will give Arsenal confidence.
The hope for United supporters is that the momentum gained against Midtjylland – the likes of Rashford, Memphis Depay and Joe Riley were all superb – will translate to the league. It will certainly be an interesting clash on Sunday.
