Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United fans would have enjoyed their side’s performance in the 5-1 win over FC Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday.
Man United had gone behind when Pione Sisto scored for the visitors and the situation looked bleak for van Gaal’s side when Juan Mata missed a penalty just before half time with the score at 1-1.
However, a superb second half display ensured United’s progression into the next round of the Europa League, with debutant Marcus Rashford scoring twice. Van Gaal praised the display following the game.
“It was a great performance. The fans will have enjoyed our attacking football”, van Gaal said.
“Midtjylland had only crossed the halfway line once and they scored. Normally you get a decline in confidence, but we continued our game. We missed a penalty, it was unbelievable but we kept going. I must give compliments to my players.”
United were drawn against Liverpool in the Round of 16 draw on Friday, meaning the two sides will face each other in European competition for the first time in history.
Van Gaal’s side were superb against Midtjylland but the Danish outfit were poor and United should always be convincingly beating teams of their calibre. It is important that fans do not get too carried away, with a tough test against Arsenal coming up on Sunday.
