The Frenchman picked up a hamstring injury in the warm-up before the club’s 5-1 victory over FC Midtjylland in the Europa League.
David de Gea also suffered a knock during the warm-up in the first-leg against the Danish side earlier in the week.
Van Gaal claims Martial’s injury is not as heavy as everybody thinks. Speaking about Martial, van Gaal said: “I don’t know because it has happened before the match. I’ve talked with him. I have talked with the physiotherapist that already had control of him. I cannot say, but it is not as heavy as everybody thinks, but you never know.”
David de Gea might be the most important player who we need to return against Arsenal this weekend but Martial is arguably just as important if we’re going to come away with three points.
In a season which has been largely dull and uninspiring, Martial’s been brilliant and one of our only shining lights. Without him up front on Sunday, we’d have very little attacking spark.
At this stage there is no confirmation as to whether he will play but the fact van Gaal hasn’t ruled him out is a real bonus. Here’s hoping he is fit.
