Louis van Gaal ‘very happy’ with Marcos Rojo’s return to fitness

Louis van Gaal has given an update on Marcos Rojo‘s fitness ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League fixture against Arsenal this weekend.

Rojo made his first appearance in months against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League last week after he dislocated his shoulder back in December.

Man United have suffered a large amount of defensive injuries this term with the likes of Chris Smalling, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson all injured.

The Dutchman has revealed he’ll be building the the Argentinian defender’s fitness up each week.

Speaking about Rojo, van Gaal said: “I’m very happy with Marcos that he played 10 or 15 minutes and how he showed already his form and shape, he was very good.

“But I have to build him up in the games and that’s not so easy, because he only had two training sessions with me. On the first day, he was with the second team and, on the second day, he was with us.

“So I take also a risk to do that, but I think that I have to do that now with 15 minutes and then 30 minutes and like that and I hope we can build him up.”

Rojo’s return is pretty important for United. With so many games coming up in March, van Gaal has to rotate his squad and Rojo will get plenty of game time under his belt. Phil Jones is currently sidelined and Chris Smalling is also suffering from shoulder problems, so we’re hardly stacked with defensive options.

Now, if we could just get Luke Shaw, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Matteo Darmian back to fitness, then our defence will be sorted but that’s not going to happen any time soon.
