Memphis tortured Andre Romer down the left-side all night and played one of his best games of the season, deservedly picking himself up the Man of the Match award.
The 22-year-old has struggled to lock-down a position on the first-team and Louis van Gaal admitted it could be his turning point in the Premier League.
Carrick claims the Netherlands winger has set his standard at Man United now.
“That’s the standard Memphis has set now,” Carrick said.
“We know the ability he’s got and we’re really pleased for him.
“He’s been training well and he’s had his ups and his downs. It’s not easy to come in as a young lad, with all the expectation and everything that comes with playing for this club, but hopefully this can kickstart him and give him a lot of confidence.
“I thought he was terrific all night and showed what he’s capable of, so now it’s up to him to do that consistently on a week-to-week basis and I’m sure he can do that.”
Carrick is spot on. Memphis has now shown us all what he can do when firing on all cylinders and everyone will want to see that sort of performance in every game from now on. Of course, that’s unreasonable but he has now raised expectations on himself which he’ll want to reach as well.
I’m a firm believer that Memphis simply needs time to blossom at Man United and now that we’ve all seen what he is really capable of, he’ll be afforded plenty more patience which could make all the difference.
