The 18-year-old Dutchman was making his full Man United debut on Wednesday night and did so in what turned out to be tough circumstances as his compatriot Daley Blind had an awful game.
It was a very accomplished debut and especially so when you consider the maturity he showed after picking up an early yellow card, and van Gaal was pleased with that.
“Timothy has saved us three times because of his speed so I am very pleased that he was on the pitch. He always closed the door for us,” he said.
I am so happy for Fosu-Mensah because ever since his debut last year for the U18s against Everton, he’s been a player who I’ve watched and admired. At every level, he’s stood out and against a physical Watford side, he more than held his own.
Fosu-Mensah really is going to be a future star. That term is banded around a lot for youngsters making their debut but he is different, a bit like how Paul Pogba was different, and United really have got themselves a new defensive gem that they need to nurture and polish up as much as possible.
