Manchester United full-back Guillermo Varela has been taken aback by the reception his performances have received on social media since his breakthrough onto the first-team.
Varela made his Man United debut against West Ham in December and earned praise from Louis van Gaal following his first start in the defeat to Wolfsburg.
The 22-year-old has sin e made eight appearances under the Dutchman this season and been awarded with a run of games after a set of impressive performances.
Speaking about his start at United, admits he’s motivated to repay the affection shown by the fans.
“I can say that it’s only recently I realised how the love you get on social media has such an effect,” he told ManUtd.com.
“I’m so popular with the fans but I also want to talk about the effect it has on me. It’s only when you realise the scale of it [that you can appreciate it], and I want to say thanks to all of those people who are supporting me, it helps to drive me forward and motivates me to produce my best on the pitch.”
Varela’s started to feel the effect of what it means to be a United player. Fans will always support the players when they show real commitment and drive to want to play for the club, that won’t ever change. Clearly you can see the impact and effect it has on the players.
I’ve been really impressed and delighted by how well Varela has done and no doubt van Gaal has been as well, hence why he’s earned himself a regular place in the team. Hopefully that run will continue, starting with West Brom on Sunday.
