Picture: Juan Mata given death stare by teammates and Van Gaal after red card against West Brom

Juan Mata‘s bemusing red card against West Bromwich Albion was greeted with confused faces and a death stare from Louis van Gaal on the Manchester United bench.

The Spaniard decided to block Darren Fletcher’s free-kick and was given a yellow card after 25 minutes. It was the sort of thing you’d do at the end of a game to waste a bit of time, not less than 30 minutes in with the scores at 0-0.

Then, Mata threw his leg in to try and stop Fletcher with the ball but completely mistimed it, giving Mike Dean no choice but to give him a second a yellow. Both cards were avoidable and the faces on the bench as Mata walked past summed it up.

What were you thinking Juan? For a player with so much experience they were two of the most foolish yellow cards you are ever likely to see, especially when you consider he was our man of the match only a few days ago.
