‘Anthony Martial’s childhood dream was to join Manchester United’ says Monaco vice-president

Monaco president Vadim Vasilyev has revealed Anthony Martial said it was his childhood dream to join Manchester United this summer.

The 20-year-old, who has ten goals in all competitions so far this season, has become one of Man United’s most important players since making the switch from Monaco and shown just how much potential he’s got.

Vasilyev had no intention of letting Martial leave to join United but admits his desire to move played an important role in the transfer.

“If I was hesitant to sell Martial? Yes, because I imagined that the 2015-16 season would be his,” Vasilyev said.

“That’s why we had extended his contract in July. Other transfers were more or less expected, not that one.

“There was the money, but also the fact that Anthony had said, ‘Mr. Vasilyev this is my childhood dream’.

“If we kill this dream, you can also lose the boy for several months. He sent me his first autographed jersey and thanked me for giving him this chance.”

Just in case you didn’t like Martial enough already as a player, you find out it was his dream as a kid to call United home. That attitude, achieving your dream, makes such a difference with players and you could see it in Anthony’s lightning start – he was delighted to be here.

Since then, Martial has only gone from strength to strength but unfortunately for him that’s been counter-acted by United’s inability to find the sort of consistency needed to put together any sort of title push.

Regardless of that, Martial’s rise has been one of the biggest positives of this season and at just 20, he’s got so much more to offer when he grows as a player. I can’t wait to see how good he can be in a few years time.
