Manchester United have stepped up plans to sign Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the summer regardless of the identity of the manager next season, according to The Mail on Sunday.
Arsenal were in the race for the Gabon international but they are not expected to challenge Man United’s expected £70m bid.
Aubameyang is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford and a bid should come at the end of the campaign.
The signing is part of a planned overhaul at United, with a director of football likely to be appointed in order to modernise the recruitment structure. FA technical director Dan Ashworth is rumoured to be the front-runner for the role.
United’s transfer business has not been good enough in recent years and it is good that the club are acting to solve the problem. Aubameyang would certainly be a quality signing were it come off.
