Louis van Gaal defends Manchester United’s lineup against West Bromwich Albion

Louis van Gaal has defended the lineup he started with in Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Man United weren’t helped by Juan Mata’s dismissal in the 26th minute at The Hawthorns but the likes of Michael Carrick and Matteo Darmian put in subpar displays.

Solomon Rondon eventually struck a second half winner for West Brom, leaving United sixth in the Premier League, three points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand. Van Gaal defended his team selection against West Brom in his pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Liverpool on Thursday.

“I shall always make my lineup in my eyes as the strongest lineup to play against the opponent,” van Gaal said.

“Nevertheless I sometimes put youngsters in my lineup but then I think it’s the best solution. Of course I have to cope with the busy schedule so sometimes I spare players, I rotate because of that. But still it is the best team because the other player with whom I have to compare a youngster is very tired, for example.”

As well as his starting XI, van Gaal made some bizarre substitutions at The Hawthorns, with Marouane Fellaini overlooked for Timothy Fosu-Mensah late on while the forward-thinking Ander Herrera was taken off in favour of Morgan Schneiderlin.

It will be interesting to see if van Gaal reinstates the likes of Guillermo Varela and Memphis Depay, who had impressed in recent weeks, against Liverpool.
