Jesse Lingard will miss Thursday night’s match against Liverpool after picking up a suspension due to two consecutive yellow cards in the FC Midtjylland tie.
The 23-year-old has had plenty of game time for Manchester United this season but Louis van Gaal will have to do without him at Anfield.
However, United should be able to cope without Lingard because we’ve got a few options in that position.
I expect to see Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford start out on the right-wing, with Memphis Depay on the left, and that’s a front four (with Juan Mata) which offers plenty of pace on the counter-attack which is more than likely going to be our main approach against Liverpool.
It’s an away leg in a European tie and the most important thing is simply to score a goal because of the away goals ruling, so United can ill afford to sit back and play for the 0-0. That being said, it wouldn’t surprise me to see van Gaal doing just that.
We should have played on the counter-attack at West Brom but we reverted to type with a stale possession game which lacked penetration. If we want to get through to the quarter-final, we’ve got to come away from Anfield with a positive result going into next week’s return leg at Old Trafford.
