Louis van Gaal has insisted that Manchester United fans enjoyed watching their side draw 1-1 at home with West Ham United in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.
Man United fans once again endured another goalless first half, and quickly descended into despair as Dimitri Payet’s free-kick looked set to put United out at the quarter-final stage of the Cup for the second year running.
Old Trafford was then awash with relief after Anthony Martial‘s late equaliser earned United a replay at Upton Park. The manager, however, was adamant that United fans generally enjoyed the game.
For all the possible adjectives that could be used to describe United this season, ‘enjoyable’ lies somewhere near the bottom – alongside ‘exciting’ and ‘convincing’.
The opening 45 minutes added to United’s dense catalogue of woeful first half displays, and the second period would have been seen as cataclysmic if it wasn’t for Martial’s smart goal.
If such a performance fits the Dutchman’s criteria for ‘enjoyable’, then United’s troubles perhaps comes as no surprise.
