Bryan Robson backs Ryan Giggs to succeed Louis van Gaal at Manchester United

Bryan Robson believes Ryan Giggs is more than capable of replacing Louis van Gaal as manager of Manchester United.

Van Gaal has come under huge pressure following a dismal set of results at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho is said to be the front-runner in the event of van Gaal’s sacking but Robson has backed Man United legend Giggs as the perfect choice to take over.

“Ryan was a great player for this club, he loves playing football the United way, he’s done all his badges and for me he’s in the right place at the right time,” Robson said.

“People say it’s too big a challenge, too big a jump. But I don’t agree. Look at Pep Guardiola, he came through the ranks at Barcelona as a player and then as a young coach and then they trusted him and he stepped up. He was tremendously successful.

“It’s the same with Ryan. He knows what this club is all about and the fans would be totally behind the club if they made that decision and totally behind Ryan.”

Robson mentions Guardiola but he was firmly an exception to the rule in terms of managers coming through the ranks.

For every Pep, there is a number of figures such as Pippo Inzaghi or Clarence Seedorf, who fail when sentiment trumps rationality. With United in such a dire strait of affairs, they simply cannot afford to gamble on Giggs. Mourinho would give United a much better chance of returning to the top.
