Herrera rang and spoke to Man United’s doctor early on Friday morning complaining of a tight leg and van Gaal said he didn’t want to take the risk by playing him.
Speaking to BT Sport ahead of kick-off, van Gaal said: “Yes he is injured. He was in the squad but he called our doctor this morning and he had a tight leg. We didn’t want to risk him.”
Man United have had rotten luck with injuries this year and with the Manchester derby on Sunday, the last thing we need is another central midfielder ruled out with an injury.
Hopefully his withdrawal was merely precautionary and Herrera can return to the team this weekend because he’s one of our best midfielders when available.
In his absence and Morgan Schneiderlin‘s continued place on the bench, our midfield is painfully pedestrian.
