Man United secured a big three points in the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League thanks to Marcus Rashford’s winner.
The result lifted United to within one point of fourth-placed City in the table. Lingard, however, insisted United aren’t getting too carried away just yet.
“Yeah it is a massive win,” Lingard said.
“The lads put a lot of effort in, we pressed really well and kept the ball really well. To get the early goal was massive for us. The manager was buzzing. But obviously we know it is not like it is the last game of the season, we have to kick on now and focus on beating Everton. This is a major boost but we have got to take it game by game still. We have game plans for set teams and when we stick to them we usually win.”
United have given themselves a great chance of securing Champions League football next season with the win over City but supporters will be wary of their side’s inconsistency this term.
Van Gaal has a great record over the top teams this season but United have struggled against the so-called ‘minnows’. It remains to be seen how United kick on following the international break.
