Louis van Gaal refuses to praise Morgan Schneiderlin too much following performance against Manchester City

Louis van Gaal has praised Morgan Schneiderlin following Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Manchester City on Sunday but he also told the Frenchman that he must maintain his performance levels.

Schneiderlin was a calm and composed presence in the middle of the park at the Etihad as Man United secured a big three points thanks to Marcus Rashford’s winner.

Marouane Fellaini had been keeping Schneiderlin out of the side in recent weeks and van Gaal urged Schneiderlin not to get too carried away.

When asked about Schneiderlin’s influence, van Gaal said: ”I don’t have to say that too loud because the last time I said I am very happy for Morgan Schneiderlin, after that he played not so well.

“But today he played a very good match. He was a lot of times available to receive the pass but also defensively was very firm and strict and he played also a very important position in midfield. I was very happy especially because I had to rotate. Fellaini could not play the fourth game in a row.”

Fellaini’s inclusion in the side often leads to United playing in a disjointed way, while Schneiderlin offers an element of control in midfield.

It is clear for all to see that Schneiderlin improves the side but van Gaal does not seem to see it that way. United were much better than they have been against City and Schneiderlin was a big part of that.
