Guillermo Varela joined up with the Uruguay national team for the first time this week ahead of their international friendly against Trinidad & Tobago.
The 22-year-old right-back has enjoyed a breakthrough season with Manchester United and earned himself a call-up to Uruguay because of how well he has played.
Matteo Darmian has had to settle for a place on the bench in recent matches simply because of how well Varela has been playing and it’s a testament to him taking advantage of the opportunity given to him by Louis van Gaal.
Hopefully Varela can get his Uruguay debut this week. He played a key role in their U20s World Cup campaign in 2013 where they lost to France on penalties in the final and now three years later he is on the verge of making his first senior appearance – progress.
In a dull season, Varela’s been one of the shining lights. Zinedine Zidane took to him when he was on loan at Real Madrid’s Castilla B side last season and we’ve seen why at United this year.
There is plenty for him to learn in terms of defensive positioning but his technical abilities and skill going forward are naturally very good, so he’s just go to work on the defensive side of his game now.
