Van Gaal has come under pressure at Man United this term following a string of disappointing results and performances.
However, the Dutchman has won praise for his handling of young players at the club, giving debuts to 14 academy players including Fosu-Mensah, who believes van Gaal should remain in charge at Man United.
When asked about van Gaal’s faith in youth, Fosu-Mensah said: “They find this very special in England.
“At the top clubs, the young boys do not quickly get a chance, but van Gaal has proved the contrary. He keeps his eye always on young boys and it is definitely important to me. Van Gaal is really a man with personality. I still think it’s great that I was able to make my debut under him. Do I hope he stays? Of course.”
Jose Mourinho, said to be the front-runner to take over at United in the event of van Gaal’s sacking, does not have the best of records in terms of bringing through youth and his appointment may be considered a step back in that respect.
It is a difficult situation but it is hard to look past United’s performances under van Gaal over the course of the campaign. While it has been fantastic to see youth given a chance, United need to return to the top and it is unlikely that they will do that with van Gaal in charge.
