Manchester United’s need for a new centre-back is nothing new. Chris Smalling‘s rise this season has been magnificent in many respects but with midfielder Daley Blind playing alongside him, there is still a clear weakness in the squad.
Over the years we’ve been linked with a host of players including Joao Miranda when he was at Atletico Madrid and now Gianluca di Marzio has once again linked Man United with the Brazilian defender.
Di Marzio says Man United have got one eye on Serie A for some new signings and more specifically on Inter Milan’s Miranda.
The 31-year-old seasoned veteran has been a mainstay in an Inter Milan which has started to regain a bit of its former strength after a few years down in the dumps. With United crying out for leaders, someone like Miranda, on paper, is a good fit.
However at the age of 31 Miranda isn’t a spring chicken and would need to be replaced within a couple of years even if he was to join and be an excellent signing. In many respects, he’s not a typical United signing but things have changed at the club in recent years and maybe that will continue to be reflected in our transfer business seeing as we did bring in Bastian Schweinsteiger last summer.
The thing with centre-backs is that there aren’t many top class ones who are genuinely available in the current market. So if we weren’t to look at Miranda, who should we look at? Leave your ideas in the comments!
