Manchester United have joined Bayern Munich in scouting Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.
Koulibaly was a target for Southampton, Norwich and Everton last year but his performances in Italy under coach Maurizio Sarri have alerted the likes of Bayern and Man United.
However, the defender is allegedly in negotiations to extend his current contract at Napoli, which expires in June 2019.
United have struggled defensively at points this season, although Louis van Gaal wasn’t helped by an injury crisis earlier in the year.
Koulibaly has made 26 appearances for Napoli this term and the club have conceded just 24 goals in 30 matches, leaving his side only three points behind current leaders Juventus. During that time, he’s gone on to become one of the best defenders in Serie A which has garnered interest from plenty of other European clubs.
With a real lack of top class defenders in modern football, players like Koulibaly are often very sought after and that looks to be the case with him.
United need quality players to add depth to their squad and Koulibaly would go a long way to providing that. It will be interesting to see who else United have lined up in the summer, particularly with the uncertainty surrounding van Gaal’s position at the club.
