Wayne Rooney will begin running outside with Manchester United’s physios this week as he steps up his recovery from a knee injury, according to the Express.

Rooney has been sidelined for a number of weeks having picked up the complaint in February.

The 30-year-old had been confined to gym work recently but he is expected to begin running in the next 48 hours.

There were fears that Rooney would miss the end of the season and the European Championships but he should be back in action during the early part of April.

Rooney had suffered a dismal 2015 but he was arguably United’s best player at the start of the year prior to his injury.

Marcus Rashford has impressed in the captain’s absence but Louis van Gaal will be keen for Rooney to return as soon as possible as his experience and knowhow could prove invaluable as United look to finish the campaign strongly.
