Manchester United’s Timothy Fosu-Mensah was in action for the Netherlands U19s side on Friday night in their 3-2 win over Ukraine.
The 18-year-old played the full 90 minutes in a centre-back role (match details here) and had no problems at all coping with the step up at international level.
Just as he has done this season with Man United’s first-team, Fosu-Mensah is accelerating through the ranks with the Netherlands having captained the U17s last year.
Fosu-Mensah has made quite the impression with United having been given his debut by Louis van Gaal and were it not for the fact he was ineligible, I wouldn’t have been surprised to see him play against Liverpool in the Europa League as well.
I’ve been banging on the Fosu-Mensah drum for quite some time now and am delighted he broke into the first-team so soon because he’s the academy prospect I am most excited about seeing progress. He’s far too good for U21s football at 18, much like Marcus Rashford, and what happens next is crucial for his career.
We’ll no doubt see Fosu-Mensah on the 2016 pre-season tour but before then it would be great to see him feature in a few more games. With our injury record, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that sooner rather than later.
