Timothy Fosu-Mensah faces a potential club vs country dilemma this summer as he is set to qualify for a U19s tournament which clashes with Manchester United’s pre-season tour of China.
Man United will tour China ahead of the next campaign, with a clash against Borussia Dortmund on July 22nd followed by a match against Manchester City three days later.
However, the dates clash with the U19s European Championships in Germany, which will be played between July 11-24.
Fosu-Mensah may be part of the Netherlands squad which is on the brink of qualifying for the tournament. The 18-year-old, whose performances have also earned calls for a senior call-up, admitted he doesn’t know what his situation with the national side is.
“I’ve no idea which Netherlands team I’ll be in at the end of the season. I’m just trying to do my best. I don’t mind which team, even if it’s Netherlands U18,” he said.
“I have to make steps and I’m trying to improve myself. My debut gave a great feeling; I was very happy and a lot of people reacted, like friends, family and also players of Netherlands U19.”
Fosu-Mensah has made three substitute appearances and one start for Man United following his debut in February.
He undoubtedly has a bright future ahead of him and, while it would be good to see him on the tour, Fosu-Mensah would be wise to represent his country and gain some much-needed experience in a competitive competition.
