Mourinho is said to be the front-runner to take over at Man United in the event of van Gaal’s sacking and numerous reports recently suggested that the Portuguese has signed a pre-contract agreement with the club.
Sheringham, who was part of United’s famous treble-winning side in the 1998/99 season, backed Mourinho to be a success at Old Trafford should he take charge.
“I think he would have to understand where he’s at and what the club demands of players, but then that means getting new players in and players to suit what is needed,” Sheringham said.
“I think Mourinho would be very good for Manchester United at the moment. I think he has a belief that he’s big enough and bright enough for the Manchester United job and I think that’s what’s needed to take over now.
“I’m sure there are other names — Diego Simeone’s doing very well at Atletico to name one — and I’m sure the club are looking all over to find the best, because they deserve the best and need the best.”
United require a big personality with proven success to take the club back to where they belong and Mourinho would provide exactly that.
There are reservations over Mourinho’s character and his reputation took a hit following his sacking from Chelsea earlier this term but he would undoubtedly provide the best chance of success at United.
