The Dutchman’s ‘dull play style’ at Old Trafford has been heavily criticised this season and reports suggest Jose Mourinho could take over this summer.
Man United made an early exit from the Champions League after the group stages, lost to Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup and were knocked out of the Europa League by Liverpool.
He insists fans should not be too quick to judge van Gaal.
“You have to give him credit, he’s given nine young players their debut. I think the future is good,” Ferguson said of van Gaal.
“You have to have some patience being a Manchester United fan and they have shown that over the years; in Matt Busby’s time, in my time.”
I completely understand that van Gaal bringing through the youngsters has only happened because of his own decision to have a thin squad to give them opportunities but to say the future looks good under the Dutchman is madness.
Fans have been patient with van Gaal. Up until November, we could see where he was going and although we didn’t all agree on the style of football, we understood what he was trying to achieve and his methods.
Since then, it’s been a slippery slope and van Gaal has lost the support of pretty much all United fans. Even entertaining the idea of him staying on past the summer irks me and as much as I love Sir Alex, this reeks of him trying to actively avoid creating a situation where he support Jose Mourinho coming in. Call me cynical but that’s how I see Fergie’s comments on van Gaal.
