Manchester United have until may for Jose Mourinho formal approach – report

Manchester United have until the start of May to make a formal approach for Jose Mourinho if they want him to replace Louis van Gaal, according to the Guardian.

Widespread reports suggest Mourinho is expecting to take over from van Gaal at Old Trafford this summer if his side fails to qualify for the Champions League next season.

The ex-Chelsea boss has refused to comment directly about which clubs are interested in bringing him in but on more than one occasion he’s made it very clear he will be returning to football this summer in a new role.

Valencia have been linked with a move for Mourinho ahead of Man United and he could be open to other job offers if he doesn’t hear from Ed Woodward before May.

From the fans’ perspective, what is the point in waiting until May to formally approach Mourinho? That carries inherent and unnecessary risks if any other club were to speak with him prior to United.

I’m giving United the benefit of the doubt and feel the club is smart enough to have already held conversations with Mourinho but whether that goes as far as a formal approach right now we just don’t know.
