Louis van Gaal has insisted that Manchester United were “lucky” to beat Everton 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Man United put in a disappointing first half display but they eventually secured the three points thanks to Anthony Martial’s strike.
The result meant United kept pace in the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League. However, van Gaal believes United were fortunate to win.
“It was more or less a stolen victory. We didn’t play so well, it looked like we were not fresh. You never know how the players will come back from the international break. We were today the lucky team,” van Gaal said.
“They played a little bit different than we expected. We want to give entertainment for the fans, but the fans were entertained today because of the tension. If we lose today, the victory against Manchester City is worthless. Now we are still in the race. We have a very important game against Tottenham.”
United only created a handful of real chances at Old Trafford and van Gaal is right in saying that they were lucky to get the three points.
That being said, at this stage of the season, results are all that matter and United got exactly that against Everton. Van Gaal’s side have a tough test against Tottenham Hotspur next time out and they need a positive result if they are to continue their momentum.
