Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes Manchester United and Real Madrid may have an agreement about David de Gea moving to the Bernabeu this summer.
De Gea came close to switching to Madrid last summer, with Keylor Navas set to go the other way, but a deal collapsed on the final day of the Spanish transfer window due to late paperwork.
Both keepers seem to have put the episode behind them as they have been in excellent form for their respective sides over the course of the campaign. However, Calderon hinted that an agreement may be in place.
“It was really weird what happened last [summer],” Calderon said.
“[But] Keylor Navas is playing [well], like you saw last night [against Barcelona]. He’s doing that in many matches. It would be really strange if David de Gea came but no doubt he is one of the best and also he’s a Spaniard, which helps. Apparently there is some agreement. They had a deal from last [summer] for him to come but I can’t tell you [for sure] as I don’t have personal knowledge of that.”
De Gea signed a new contract at Man United soon after his move to Madrid collapsed and the ease in which he agreed a deal was a little bizarre.
It was clear that De Gea wanted to leave and he may still harbour ambitions of playing for Madrid given United’s struggles this season. The hope for supporters is that Navas’ good form has convinced Madrid to abandon their pursuit of De Gea.
