Most Manchester United fans, myself included, consider Louis van Gaal leaving the club this summer as an inevitability – a case of when and not if.
However, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf have published an article on Tuesday suggesting van Gaal has been given assurances he’ll get another €100m to spend on new signings and is eyeing up Everton’s Romelu Lukaku as somebody he wants to bring to Old Trafford.
While this is of course speculation at the moment, De Telegraaf are an outlet who have, from the very start before he became Man United boss, been first to the news about van Gaal. Could this be their latest scoop of information? I certainly hope not but maybe the Dutchman leaving United isn’t a foregone conclusion.
What happens if United sneak into the top four this season and we win the FA Cup as well? That will give some justification to those who want to see van Gaal get another year in charge and that scares me.
Somehow getting a top four finish and some silverware will not gloss over the cracks for me for what has been a very disappointing campaign in which we haven’t just failed to meet our expectations, we’ve become a mediocre club where draws and losses aren’t surprising.
Chelsea and Manchester City have both sorted themselves for next year but at the moment United is being left in limbo as a club. Will we get any clarity on Jose Mourinho any time soon? Will van Gaal be staying? Hopefully it won’t be too long before there is something said either way.
