Manchester United’s Chris Smalling: Daley Blind has been a ‘joy to play alongside’

Chris Smalling has described Manchester United teammate Daley Blind as a “joy to play alongside” following the Dutchman’s good form this season.

Blind, a midfielder by trade, has primarily been used in central defence with Smalling over the course of the campaign.

The 26-year-old produced arguably his best performance in a Man United shirt on Sunday as he shut down Romelu Lukaku in the 1-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford. Smalling lavished praise on his defensive partner.

“Ever since he joined the club he has rarely been injured,” Smalling said.

“He has been able to bang out the games and have a very high consistency. He is a joy to play alongside.

“It is a good partnership. We know we can rely on each other. When there is a situation you don’t have to over cover because you don’t trust your partner. We trust each other fully and we bring out the best in each other as the games have gone on and the more games we have played together.

“By each performance he is putting any critics out there to bed. He has been one of the top centre-backs this year.”

United have been hit with a number of injuries this season and Blind has had to contend with frequent changes in defence but he has still been a consistent and reliable performer for the side.

Blind can sometimes lose his man but he has otherwise been excellent in the way he has gone about adjusting to a role at centre-back. He will need to put in another top performance in the clash against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
