Thierry Henry backs Jose Mourinho to succeed at Manchester United if he replaces Louis van Gaal

Thierry Henry believes Jose Mourinho would be a success at Manchester United if he replaced Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford this summer.

Mourinho, sacked by Chelsea earlier this season, has been strongly linked with a move to Man United in recent months and widespread reports suggested that he has already signed a pre-contract agreement with the club.

Arsenal legend Henry backed United to get back to “big wins” if they took on Mourinho as manager.

“I admire Jose Mourinho a lot,” Henry said.

“He is one of the best coaches in history, he has won almost everything and for clubs that no one was expecting, such as at Porto and Inter Milan. Then, he still won the Spanish league with Real Madrid facing one of Barcelona’s best teams ever.

“Manchester United need to get back to the big wins and for that they must have a coach with a winning profile.

“No one can question anything that van Gaal has done for football, but his message is not going into the group. Jose Mourinho is fantastic and can be an excellent solution for the club, he is synonymous with victory, although things have not gone very well at Chelsea earlier this season.”

It had looked almost a certainty that Mourinho would be manager of United at the end of the campaign but a recent report suggesting that van Gaal is confident of staying at Old Trafford has complicated things.

Nobody truly knows what is happening with the situation but it’s safe to say another season of van Gaal’s dour football would not go down well among the Old Trafford faithful.
