Phil Jones is back in training with Manchester United’s first-team ahead of this weekend’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur.
After he struggled to return to full fitness following the ankle injury that has kept him sidelined since January, it’s the latest attempt at a comeback from Jones.
Jones played 76 minutes for Man United’s U21s as they drew 1-1 with Chelsea on Monday night at Old Trafford and although fans were overall quite disappointed with his clumsy performance, which may delay his return onto Louis van Gaal’s starting XI, he’s at least back in training.
As far as unfulfilled promise goes, Jones is right up there. Sir Alex Ferguson once went as far as to compare the potential of Jones to Duncan Edwards who was widely considered our best ever academy graduate before the Munich Air Disaster tragically took his life.
With Chris Smalling and Daley Blind proving to be our best partnership this season, I’d be very surprised to see Jones start ahead of either so long as they are fit but heading into the summer, his future remains uncertain and there’s every chance he might not be here next year.
